You can find a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Wawa in almost every city we travel to domestically, but sometimes you’re looking for more local flair. These three specialty roasters are sure to deliver a unique – and tasty – experience for the coffee connoisseur.

  1. Elixr Coffee Roasters, Philadelphia PA

Elixr roasts their own single-origin coffee, and offer a variety of brewing options, as well as teas and fresh small-bites. They offer a solid brunch on Saturday mornings, but their coffee is a treat all week long. Down a side street and just a five minute walk from the layover hotel, you might not notice this place unless you know where to look.

Great for: hip atmosphere, beans for days, pastries

  1. Beansmith Coffee Roasters, Omaha NE

Beansmith is a bit of a walk from our layover hotel in Omaha, NE, but it’s lovely in the summer, and totally worth the brisk hike in the wintertime. This clean, spacious specialty roaster focuses on quality control and sustainable sourcing. They offer beer and wine in the evening, if you get in too late for a caffeine fix, but should definitely consider a bag of beans to take home.

Great for: Wifi, crews, evenings

  1. Sefton Coffee Company, Richmond VA

Sefton might require a little bit more of a trek from our downtown Richmond hotel, but if you brave the cross-walkless street crossings and steep hills, you’ll be rewarded with a quaint, retro-esque hole in the wall delivering rich coffee options and daily lunch specials. The quiet atmosphere lends itself to reading a newspaper or book.

Great for: late breakfast, peace and quiet, consistent brews
